OBJECTIVES:
This one-day workshop is focused upon experienced trainers who want to increase their knowledge and skills while learning how to implement new training methods and techniques for adult training.
Most experienced trainers already know that when a program tries to cover too much material, and does not allow time for practice, it will be ineffective. We have discovered that when planning training courses for adults, two points are important to remember – the material should be practical and the training should be active. This is because adult learners are different from students. Adults are more self-directed and expect to take responsibility for decisions. The familiar information dump, classroom lecture format doesn’t work well with adults.
Effective training designed for adults must take the following into account:
-
Adults need to know why they need to learn something.
-
Adults need to learn experientially.
-
Adults approach learning as problem solving.
-
Adults learn best when the topic is of immediate value.
The workshop consists of focused training methods including role-play and group exercises designed to enhance the learning process. Lecture time is short because more time is spent on applying how-to material to solve problems. This active training method increases the likelihood that new skills will be learned and applied on the job - the test for effective training!
