FINANCE WORKSHOP FOR NON-FINANCE STAFF

COURSE NUMBER: MT-20

OBJECTIVES:
This interactive workshop makes use of a board-based business simulation designed to teach business and financial management. It is a transparent model of a company that sells and installs three products into different markets. Every aspect of the business' finances is visible, which makes it as easy and enjoyable as possible to learn the basic concepts of pricing, marketing and sales, profit, cash flow, direct costs, and expenses. Participants work in five or six teams. Each team has a game board representing the team's business. Silver chips represent money while colored chips show the products that are being manufactured and sold. The participants will learn:
  • how their company works and recognize how they contribute.
  • about business jargon and what each word or expression means.
  • to make sound business decisions and think across functional boundaries.
  • to think from financial principles and create a sound business plan.
  • how to increase shareholder value.

CONTENTS:

  • The Business Cycle
  • The Business Market
  • The Financial Accounts
  • Learning to Plan
  • Cash and Expansion
  • Progress Review
  • Instructor Feedback

BENEFITS:
  • An enjoyable and involving way to learn.
  • Makes the key concepts of business (Gross Profit, Net Profit, Cash Flow, Economic Profit, and Value Creation) easy to understand and apply.
  •  Shows how the Profit & Loss Account and Balance Sheet can be used to analyze and control a business, and how the same thinking can be used to develop successful business plans.
  •  The live nature of the exercise means that the learning is easily linked to real business situations, and will be learned rapidly and remembered for a long time.
  • If the participants include a cross section of the business, much can be gained in breaking down established silos which impede efficiency in the firm.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Anyone in business who needs to improve their understanding of what makes the business work, including employees who need to understand how their contribution fits into the whole, supervisors and junior managers with responsibility for implementing budgets, middle managers with budgeting responsibility, senior managers with limited financial knowledge, specialists (e.g. in R&D) whose work has a financial impact, start-up businessmen, business owners in their first few years of trading, bank managers wanting to understand their customers’ needs, as well as business students at secondary, tertiary, and MBA level.

LENGTH: 1 day - Simple introduction of basic business concepts: profit, cash flow, pricing for profit, competition, growing a business, business planning. 1.5 to 2 days - Includes the full program on creating shareholder value, showing every participant how they contribute to the financial success of the business, and how that success benefits both shareholders and employees.
